Avocado

In terms of biological classification avocado is a fruit. However, it is predominantly used in savoury dishes. It is mistakenly known as a vegetable.



An avocado is closer to a berry in botanical terms. In some respects it is a tropical fruit akin to a banana, but its oily content and nutty flavor reminds one of an olive. Also, Avocado is known as the "alligator pear" because of the rough skin that some varieties have.



Avocado is almost perfect in terms of the nutrients. It contains Vitamin A, B-complex, C, E, H, K, and folic acid, plus magnesium, copper, iron, calcium, potassium and many other trace elements. It also provides all of the essential amino acids (i.e. with 18 amino acids in all), plus 7 fatty acids, including Omega 3 and 6. A small avocado will provide more protein than a huge steak. Also, it is cholesterol free. Cos, only animal foods have cholesterol.

If anyone who tells you certain foods or supplements can make your stomach or blood getting less acidic, you would probably not understand nutrition.



Your stomach is so acidic, no food can change its acidity. Citrus fruits, vinegar, and vitamins such as ascorbic acid or folic acid do not change the acidity of your stomach or your bloodstream. An entire bottle of calcium pills or antacids would not change the acidity of your stomach for more than a few minutes.



All foods that leave your stomach are acidic. Then, they enter your intestines where secretions from your pancreas neutralize the stomach acids. So no matter what you eat, the food in stomach is acidic and the food in the intestines is alkaline!

Is Lemon Acidic or Alkaline?

Because of it's taste, lemon is commonly believed to be acidic However, in the view of nutritional science, lemon is an alkaline food! Why?



When food is be taken, it will be oxidized. Water, carbon dioxide and an inorganic compounds will be formed. The alkaline or acidic nature of the inorganic compound will determine whether the food is an alkaline or acidic, indeed.



When food contains more sodium, potassium or calcium, it becomes an alkaline food (e.g. when sodium compounds dissolve in water, it forms an alkaline solution).

Na2CO3 + H2O ---> 2NaHCO3
HCO3- + H2O ---> H2CO3 + OH-
2(Na+)2O22- + 2H2O ---> 4Na+OH- + O2

On the contrary, if food contains more sulphur, phosphate or chloride, it becomes an acid food.
